Celebrating the 122nd Anniversary of Alexander Chaka: Aleksandar Chak Award Ceremony and Winners

Celebrating the 122nd anniversary of Alexander Chaka, on October 27, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. The Aleksandar Chakas award ceremony was held for the thirteenth time in the exhibition hall “Rīga art room”.

The awarding of the Aleksandar Čak award began in 2001, the centenary of the poet, and it is presented every two years for an artistically high-value interpretation of Riga in literature, music, film, theater or visual arts, bookselling, design, architecture, as well as research and popularization of A. Čak’s creative heritage and in translation.

After evaluating all the applications for 2023, the award jury commission decided to award three Aleksandar Čak awards and one promotional award for creative contribution to the preservation and promotion of the cultural heritage of the city of Riga, as well as to the actualization of the poet’s personality and literary contribution.

After evaluating the applications and getting acquainted with all the cultural events, the Jury Commission of the Alexander Čak Award decided to award the promotion award to the artist Ineta Freidenfeld for the exhibition series “City Angels” and the open workshops “Divine Ecosystems” in the nomination “For an artistically high-quality and innovative interpretation of Riga”.

Valdis Butāns received the Alexander Cak Award for the innovative creation of a concert program for the 50th anniversary Gala concert of the “Rīga” orchestra, in which new works were performed – Ilona Breħa’s “Symphony for Riga” and Jānis Lūsēns, Valtas Pūce and Kārļis Lāčs’ instrumental song cycle “Rīga postcards”.

Harijs Tumans received the Aleksandar Čak award for his innovative view of the historical architecture of Riga in the monograph “Antique images in the streets of Riga”.

Inese Šinta received the Aleksandar Čak award for reviving the memory of Latvian literary figures and creating the cultural space “Emīlija Čadaraine and Aleksandrs Čaks” in the Lilac Garden of the Pēteras Upīš Horticulture Museum in Dobele.

Actor Mārtiņš Vilsons, Riga Chamber Choir “Ave Sol” led by conductor Andras Veismanis and pianist Aldis Liepiņš presided over the Aleksandar Čak award ceremony and entertained the visitors with a cultural program.

The event was organized by the Association of Cultural Institutions of Riga Municipality, Exhibition Hall “Rīga Art Space” in cooperation with the Aleksandar Čak Museum and the Aleksandar Čak Society. Supported by Riga City Council, Department of Education, Culture and Sports of Riga City Council.
