Celebrating Six Decades of the Aston Martin DB5: An Iconic British Car

Can you believe it? It’s been six decades since the Aston Martin DB5 was first introduced to the world and the British carmaker is celebrating the iconic model’s birthday today.

We have no doubt you’ll be familiar with the car in one way or another, but if you need a refresher, here’s a quick history lesson.

In 1963, Aston needed a new model to keep the brand one step ahead of its rivals and, considering it hadn’t launched an entirely new car since the 1950s, it was long overdue.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show, the DB5 was unveiled with a new Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera design, numerous technical and equipment improvements over the old DB4, as well as a redesigned engine offering more power.

Speaking of engines, the model debuted a new 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine with 210 kW that allowed it to reach a maximum speed of more than 241 km/h, making it the “fastest 4-seater GT car.” of the world” at that time.

However, it was not these new features that made the car so special, but rather its appearance in a certain series of secret agent and spy films. That’s right, how can we not mention James Bond when we talk about the DB5?

The car’s status in pop culture didn’t just extend to Sean Connery taking a ride in Goldfinger, as other celebrities like Sir Paul McCartney of the Beatles and George Harrison were among the famous figures who couldn’t help but buy one.

Another notable DB5 owner is Aston Martin CEO Lawrence Stroll, who had this to say about the model: “The David Brown era has given us many fantastic Aston Martin sports cars, but none are more iconic, respected and desirable than the Aston Martin sports cars. «. DB5, which laid the foundations for our identity as a British luxury brand synonymous with style, performance and exclusivity.

“It is only right that, as we turn 60, we take a moment to look back and reflect on the incredible role this car plays in our 110-year heritage.”

The DB5 legacy continues to this day, with the newly introduced DB12 carrying the torch for hand-built British luxury passenger cars.
