Celebrating National Organ and Tissue Donor Day: A Statement from the Hospital Transplant Commission of the Regional Hospital of Melilla.

Statement from the Hospital Transplant Commission of the Regional Hospital of Melilla on the occasion of National Organ and Tissue Donor Day

As every year, on the first Wednesday of June, the National Organ and Tissue Donor Day is celebrated in Spain, organized by the Union of Solid Organ Transplant Recipients, with the support of the National Transplant Organization (ONT) and that this year leads by motto ‘I can be the piece that others need’.

On this day we come together to honor and recognize those who have given the most valuable gift: organ and tissue donation. It is a time to celebrate the generosity and compassion of those who have made the choice to give life to others through their donations.

First of all, we want to express our deepest gratitude to the donors and their families. His altruism and courage have made it possible for many people to have had a second chance at life. Their acts of love and solidarity leave an indelible legacy in society.

We also want to highlight the tireless work of health professionals and the ONT. Their work is essential to guarantee that the donation and transplant processes are carried out in an effective, safe and ethical manner. Your commitment and dedication have saved countless lives and provided hope to those who need it most.

According to data from the ONT, Spain has registered a significant increase in donation and transplant activity in the first quarter of 2023 compared to 2022, placing us at figures similar to those of 2019, when all-time highs were recorded.

Spain has been at the world forefront in organ donation and transplantation for more than 30 consecutive years, with 15 daily transplants, which represents a rate of 113 per million population (pmp) in 2022, and an average of 7 daily donors, with a rate of 46.3 deceased donors pmp, figures much higher than those reached by the rest of the world’s countries.

The worldwide prestige of our model is due, on the one hand, to the National Donation and Transplant Program of the ONT together with the autonomous communities and, on the other, to the solidarity of donors and their families.

In Melilla we have experienced a considerable increase in transplants compared to last year, 4 patients received a kidney transplant so far this year, recovering pre-pandemic figures. However, the number of donors remains stagnant, so this day, in addition to serving to show infinite gratitude for all those who altruistically considered continuing to give life despite their death, should also serve to continue raising awareness among the population about the necessity of the act of donating, its importance lies in the fact that it represents an action of social solidarity allowing to raise the quality of population health. Organ donation is considered the greatest act of love between human beings.

It is an important celebration and under the motto ‘I can be the piece that others need’ we want to highlight the crucial role that each individual can play in becoming a donor. This day invites us to reflect on the generosity and altruistic act of donating our organs after passing away, thus being able to change the lives of other people. We can all make a difference and leave a lasting legacy by donating our organs and tissues. Today is a time to recognize and thank donors and their families for their valuable contributions in providing hope and new opportunities to those on the transplant waiting list.
