Celebrating Kindergarten Day: The Importance of Early Childhood Education and Development.

Today, the youngest receive not only care, but also education in day-care centers.

Landshut – pm (04/24/2023) Early childhood education promotes the development of children: What is a familiar thought today was a groundbreaking new insight in the 19th century, which has greatly enriched the lives of countless children. The Johanniter remember this on the occasion of the annual “Kindergarten Day” on April 21st. This day honors the German educator Friedrich Wilhelm August Fröbel. He set new standards for pre-school care – and founded the first German kindergarten in 1840.

“The fact that young children also need education and training in addition to care is a matter of course for modern kindergarten pedagogy,” explains Sylvia Meyer, head of the children’s facilities at the Johanniter in East Bavaria. “But in Froebel’s time it was a completely new pedagogical approach to see the early years of life as an important phase in human development. As a time that requires a targeted pedagogical concept and an appropriate environment.”

Children are curious about the world and want to get to know it

In the 98 day-care centers run by Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe in eastern Bavaria, education is a top priority. Early childhood education and personal support support the children in their individual development. “Children learn with all their senses,” says Meyer. “Education and support therefore mean offering them age-appropriate opportunities to discover, observe and try things out. Whether it’s climbing or handicrafts, singing, painting, preparing food together or going on small trips: children want to understand their world and enjoy developing their skills.”

Security and reliable caregivers provide support

Last but not least, the structured everyday life and the community in their group as well as the familiar caregivers offer the daycare children security and security. Froebel, who also coined the term “kindergarten”, recognized these needs as well. To put it simply, he described it like this: as a fertile, protected environment in which experienced staff – today including trained educators – accompany and support the children.
