MUSIC – Hip-hop is fifty years old and what better place to celebrate than where it was born: New York. Created on August 11, 1973, the cultural movement has crossed borders and transformed the music industry. It is celebrated today in the four corners of the Big Apple, as shown in the video at the top of the article.

This Friday evening, for the exact anniversary date, a big concert is planned at Yankee Stadium. DJ Kool Herc, the father of hip-hop himself, will take to the stage alongside other artists who have followed in his footsteps, from former band Run-DMC to rappers Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne.

The day before, Thursday August 10, rappers Ja Rule and Jadakiss and R’n’B singer Ashanti were invited to light up the famous Empire State Building. Together they celebrated fifty years of urban music atop one of New York’s tallest skyscrapers.

Exhibitions and neighborhood parties

New York Mayor Eric Adams also paid tribute to the artistic legends of hip-hop, inaugurating an exhibition under the rotunda of City Hall.

Since the beginning of August, hip-hop culture has made its mark on the streets with « block parties », neighborhood parties open to all. Brooklyn and Queens have already held theirs the weekend of August 5. There « block party » from the cradle of hip-hop, the Bronx, will take place on Saturday August 12.

In July, a huge free exhibit opened in the Great Brooklyn Library. The Book of HOV retraces the journey and career of rapper Jay Z, a leading figure in the genre. And another interactive retrospective looks back over fifty years of hip-hop history and its impact on the United States. Hip-hop still has many years ahead of it.
