Both Friday and Saturday, Oslo celebrates the 50th anniversary of Pakistani immigration to Oslo.
The anniversary committee’s leader, Khalid Mahmood, opened the ceremony in Oslo City Hall on Friday, before city council leader Raymond Johansen (Labor Party) gave a speech. Pakistan’s ambassador to Norway, Tale Baber Amin, did the same.
On Saturday, the stage is set for a folk festival at Rådhusplassen to mark the anniversary further.
Hadia Tajik (Labor Party) on Friday became the first politician with an immigrant background to serve as Norwegian head of government under the Prime Minister at the Palace, according to NRK.
–– Even though the time is coincidental, it is something beautiful that it coincides with my parents’ generation’s arrival in Norway, said Tajik, who himself has a family background from Pakistan.
Immigration from Pakistan began in the mid-1960s and increased from 1971.
There are about 40,000 Norwegians who have a background from Pakistan, according to Statistics Norway (SSB). About half are immigrants, while the others are Norwegian-born descendants.
