The 360th anniversary of the settlement of Reunion continues to be celebrated in Saint-Paul this Sunday, November 12, 2023. A day marked by history and culture with the organization of numerous events (photo: rb/www .imazpress.com)
It was in 1663 that the permanent settlement of the island called Bourbon begins. That year, Louis Payen and his companion arrived in Saint-Paul with around ten people, bringing with them tools, seeds and livestock.
The group will settle at the back of the coastal strip of sand, at the foot of the mountain slope, near a cave between Ravine Bernica and Cap de la Marianne.
Two years later, in 1665, Etienne Regnault in turn settled with around twenty settlers.
The anniversary of the settlement marks an important moment for the city of Saint-Paul, recalling its central role in the development and prosperity of the island. The opportunity to celebrate and (re)discover its fascinating history with the organization of a weekend of activities. On the program, gentle heritage walks, dance shows, exhibitions, conferences and even Kabar.
On Saturday, a dance show and a kabar with JAV and Danyel Waro were organized on the seafront. Not forgetting the food festival which highlighted cuisines from around the world. And the activities continue this Sunday.
– Heritage walks, exhibitions and workshops –
As part of this 360th anniversary, a long ride in soft mobility is offered to visitors who will be accompanied by a guide. The objective is to discover the Tour des Roches with seven stage points. Participants will pass by the Bernica ravine, the powder magazine, the wash house, the water mill, the vital basin and the large Savanna house. Eight departure slots are possible this Sunday.
At the same time, in the public reading network, a stamp and postcard making workshop is offered by the association “Un timbre pour tous 974” on November 22 at the Plateau Caillou library.
For its part, the Réunion des livres is setting up an exhibition “Draw the city”, Saint-Paul, the cradle of the island’s settlement, until the end of the month in the libraries of Bois-de-Nèfles and Guillaume.
Another exhibition, “20 years, 20 poets” at the Michel-Adelaïde media library in Saint-Gilles-les-Bains.
