Celebrating 120 Years of Aspazija’s House: A Historic Landmark in Jūrmala

This year marks 120 years since the construction of the luxurious wooden house with Art Nouveau elements, which currently houses the Aspazija House of the Jūrmala Museum, and 90 years have passed since the poet Aspazija, together with her housekeeper Anniņa and her brother’s daughter Virēna, moved from Riga to Dubulti, informs the Jūrmala City Administration.

In commemoration of these years, in Aspazija’s house on July 26 at Anna’s day afternoon will take place at 16.00. At the event, Ainārs Radovits, the author of the book “History of Doubles”, will talk about life in Dubulti at the time when Aspazija arrived in Jūrmala. The historian promises to reveal new facts, including the meeting of the poetess with the long-time head of the city of Riga Jūrmala, Aleksandars Jansons.

The senior citizens’ ensemble “Vakarvējš” from the Vilce Town Hall will welcome the guests of Aspazija’s house with musical performances, offering the audience a special program – songs composed by the head of the ensemble, Māra Andersones, with Aspazija’s lyrics, the city administration says.

Aspazija’s house – Jurmala 20th century. the starting building is an excellent monument of wooden architecture and history of national importance. The building was built in 1903. In the narrowest part of Jūrmala, where the windows of the building offer a fabulous view of Lielupi and the sea is only a few hundred meters away, the great poetess spent the last act of her life (1933-1943). The romantic wooden house with two turrets became the place of Aspasia’s creative success during times of war and change. The atmosphere of the area contributed to the creation of new works – “Journey of the Soul”, “Scattered Roses”, “Under the Evening Star”, “Moon Garden”.

Until 1987, when the house was handed over to the Jurmala Museum of History and Art, it was at the disposal of the Jurmala Executive Committee. Combining the initiative of Jūrmala’s intelligentsia, the city’s material resources and the financial support of foreign compatriots (Uldis Raiskums, USA), in 1996 the house was opened to visitors as a museum.

At the end of his life, Aspazija expressed his wish that the house in Dubultos would become a meeting place for creative personalities. Today, poet Aspazija’s house is a meeting place for writers, artists, photographers – creative personalities, poetry and music, art and history, friendly conversations and meetings create a special aura of Aspazija’s house, according to the city administration.
