On July 4, the United States celebrates its national holiday, which marks the declaration of independence of July 4, 1776. New York is obviously on its 31st with several unmissable events.

The 4th of July parade

Contrary to what one might think, the July 4th parade does not take place in Manhattan but in a small town on Staten Island called Travis, named after the Colonel Jacob Travis who resided here during the War of Independence. This parade has been around for over 100 years and is therefore reminiscent of Staten Island’s role in the War of Independence. Meet at 12h30 au Showplace Entertainment Center (141 East Service Road).

This one-of-a-kind competition has been held every year since 1972 but its origins date back to 1916 when immigrants challenged themselves to be the most patriotic …
If you want to compete, know that the record has since been held by Joey Chestnut who devoured 70 hot dogs. Score to beat!

The Empire State in blue-white-red

As soon as night falls, all eyes will be on the Empire State building. To celebrate the National Day, the most famous building in New York will be lit in the colors of the American flag, blue, white and red.

The 4th of July fireworks in New York

As in previous years, a great fireworks display will be fired on the East River. If you want to have a front row seat, here are the two solutions:

  • Rendezvous in the early evening in Brooklyn Bridge Park: you will then have a view of the fireworks, the Brooklyn Bridge and the New York skyline. Be careful, however: for security reasons, the police limit the number of people who can enter the park. So you have to arrive early.
  • Another equally spectacular option: hop aboard a boat! For having it done, this is a great solution to escape the crowds while still enjoying a very privileged vantage point. You can book your cruise now on the page dedicated to the 4th of July fireworks cruise.
