The president pro tempore of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), the Honduran president Xiomara Castroconvened this Saturday the Troika of the regional organization to discuss the forcible seizure of the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador, to arrest former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas.

«Given the evident violation of the American Convention on Asylum and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations by the Government of Ecuador, by forcibly taking over the Mexican Embassy in Quito, I urgently convene the Celac Troika for this Monday, April 8 »indicated the also president of Honduras, in a message on the social network X.

Castro also summoned the foreign ministers of the Celac member countries for the 9th.

«Both meetings will be held virtually at 11:00 Honduras time (17:00 GMT). The meeting of presidents will be scheduled,” adds the message from the head of Celac.

Preventive detention order

The Honduran president also condemned and described as “intolerable” the invasion of the Ecuadorian Police into the Mexican Embassy in that country to arrest the former Ecuadorian vice president.

«The assault on the Mexican Embassy by the Government of Ecuador, with the aim of kidnapping former Vice President Jorge Glas, constitutes an intolerable act for the international community, given that it ignores the historical and fundamental right to asylum. “We strongly repudiate this violation of the sovereignty of the Mexican State and international law.”the president stressed.

He also expressed his solidarity with Mexico and its president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Jorge Glas, former vice president of Ecuador during the presidential term of Rafael Correa (2007-2017), was transferred this Saturday to the maximum security prison of La Roca, while the Organization of American States (OAS) and several countries in the region have rejected his detention inside the Mexican Embassy, ​​hours after the Mexican Government had granted him political asylum on Friday.

Glas, who is under an arrest warrant and placed in preventive detention, was taken by plane from the Flagrancy Unit of Quito, where he spent the night after he was taken from the Mexican diplomatic headquarters, to La Roca, which is located in the prison complex of the city of Guayaquil, located in the area coast of the country, and which is reserved for the most dangerous criminals.
