UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has ruled out playing Champions League matches outside the continent.
Sharjah 24 – Asaad Khalil:
Aleksander Ceferin, president of the European Football Association (UEFA), has closed the doors to rumors that some Champions League matches will take place outside the continent.
Several reports had spoken of an Executive Committee meeting in (UEFA), to explore options for holding group stage matches in neutral regions, such as the United States of America, China and the Middle East.
These proposals have come as the tournament prepares for a new change in its system, starting in 2024, in which the group stage will be replaced by the championship system.
But the plans to organize matches outside Europe remain only rumors, according to statements by Ceferin, who closed the door to those proposals, during a press conference today, Wednesday.
“With all due respect to the media, it is impossible to imagine this type of news, we have never discussed it,” Ceferin explained.
“But suddenly we can read in the media that it will happen, even if it has not been indicated, we are going to ask UEFA directly.”
“I would have known if there had been discussions on how to play Champions League matches outside of Europe, and I don’t know anything about it,” Ceferin said.
