CEC announces extraordinary elections to Riga City Council on August 29

The Central Election Commission (CEC) announced the elections to the Riga City Council on August 29. Due to Covid-19, there are also some changes in the usual electoral procedure, especially when applying for a home vote. From this day on, the pre-election campaign period begins, which is promised to be closely monitored by the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau.

Citizens of Latvia and EU member states from the age of 18 who had a registered residence in Riga until 31 May or who own real estate in Riga have the right to participate in the elections to the Riga City Council.

On election day, polling stations will be open from 7.00 to 22.00, but there will also be an opportunity to vote three days before this date.

“Polling stations will start working on duty on August 24, but they will be more installation work. The application for voting at home has also been changed, this time in connection with the risks of Covid-19 infection it will be possible to apply for voting at home by post, e-mail and latvija.lv, sending an application to the Riga City Election Commission, ”explained Kristīne Bērziņa, Head of the Central Election Commission.

The voting document for the Riga City Council elections will be a valid passport or identity card. CVK will send out letters to the residents with information on which polling station they need to vote for, and from July 30, they will also be able to find out their poll by calling the CVK reference phone or the OCMA e-service.

From July 30 to August 15, it will be possible to change the polling station to any other polling station in Riga. Small changes are expected for the residents of some districts of Riga.

“The number has not changed, some places have changed. “Skulled off” are private secondary schools, private school “RIMS” in Ķengarags and “Riman” in Sarkandaugava, in these cases the district has been moved to other, closer premises. And, considering that data exchange has been introduced, another polling station, which was planned to be supplemented in Vecmīlgrāvis in the spring, has been moved to Rīga 1st Gymnasium with the idea that the center would like to vote more, ”said Ritvars Eglājs, Secretary of the Central Election Commission.

The pre-election campaign period begins today. During this time, the KNAB will intensify the financial control of the parties, as well as monitor the placement of campaign materials. All campaign materials must indicate who paid for them, and the KNAB invites citizens to report any illegal campaigning by politicians.
