A fragile ceasefire in southern Lebanon remains a major concern, according to French Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu. His recent visit underscored the precarious situation, with a joint French-American monitoring committee reporting a staggering 300 ceasefire violations. The 60-day truce, now halfway through, faces an uncertain future.
During a visit to a UNIFIL base in Deir Kifa, Lecornu stated, “This French-American mechanism has practically counted 300 violations, which means that it is fully carrying out its role.” He added, “We are halfway through the framework of the ceasefire. This, with the first results recorded, especially in the ability to contain the conflict and ensure security.” The high number of violations highlights the challenges in maintaining peace in the region.
Lecornu emphasized the need for continued vigilance, describing his visit as “a starting point (that allows) planning for the remaining 26 days of a ceasefire that we know is fragile, and that inevitably requires the will of both sides.” he stressed, ”this is why we are doing everything we can to ensure the steadfastness of the ceasefire.”
Looking ahead to the ceasefire’s expiration, Lecornu outlined the expected deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces, stating, “the Lebanese armed Forces shoudl have deployed where Hezbollah was (…) and where the Israeli forces are.” This statement underscores the significant security challenges and the crucial role of the Lebanese military in maintaining stability.
Lecornu’s visit to Lebanon included meetings with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and Lebanese army Commander General Joseph Aoun. Discussions also took place with Brigadier General Edgar Lowndes, commander of the sector south of the Litani River. The ministers even joined French UNIFIL troops in Deir Kifa for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
In a separate statement, General Aoun reflected on the past year and the challenges ahead. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “We are ending a year that brought many tragedies and sorrows as an inevitable result of the war and its repercussions, and we are welcoming a new year. We carry our hopes and wishes that the Lebanese will enjoy the security they deserve and the stability they long for.” He also addressed his troops directly, saying, “To our soldiers who face dangers and prove daily that they live up to the trust of their leadership, as well as the Lebanese people: great challenges await you, so be prepared for them, you are the protectors of hope and the future.”
The situation in southern Lebanon remains tense, demanding continued international attention and cooperation to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety and security of the Lebanese people. The success of the ceasefire hinges on the commitment of all parties involved and the effective implementation of the agreed-upon security measures.

Dr.Nadia Khalil is a leading expert on Middle eastern conflicts and has been closely following developments in southern Lebanon. Senior Editor of World Today News, Allison Green, sat down with Dr. khalil to discuss the fragility of the ceasefire and what it means for the future.
Allison Green: Dr. Khalil, thank you for joining us today. The recent visit by French Minister of the Armed Forces,Sébastien Lecornu, has shed light on the precarious situation in southern Lebanon. Could you elaborate on the significance of his comments regarding the ”staggering” number of ceasefire violations?
Dr. Nadia Khalil: Certainly, Allison. Minister Lecornu’s observations are deeply concerning. The sheer number of reported violations – 300 according to the french-American monitoring committee – indicates a breakdown in trust and a willingness to disregard the agreed-upon terms. This raises serious doubts about the ceasefire’s long-term viability.
Allison Green: The ceasefire is only halfway through its 60-day duration. What are the major obstacles to its successful completion, and what are the potential consequences of its failure?
Dr. Nadia Khalil: Several factors contribute to the fragility of this truce. Firstly, the underlying tensions between hezbollah and Israel remain unresolved. Deep mistrust fuels a volatile atmosphere where even minor incidents can quickly escalate. Secondly, the involvement of multiple external actors complicates the situation. Regional powers often have their own agendas and may not be fully committed to a peaceful resolution.
The failure of this ceasefire would have devastating consequences. It could trigger a full-blown conflict with unimaginable human cost and further destabilize an already vulnerable region. It would also undermine international efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East.
Allison Green: Minister Lecornu emphasized the crucial role of the Lebanese Armed Forces in maintaining security. What challenges does the Lebanese military face, and how can the international community best support their efforts?
Dr. Nadia Khalil: The Lebanese Armed Forces are caught in a tough position. They are tasked with enforcing the ceasefire while lacking the resources and political backing to effectively manage a complex and multifaceted conflict.
The international community can support the Lebanese military by providing financial assistance, training, and logistical support. It’s also crucial to encourage dialogue and cooperation between all stakeholders, including Hezbollah and Israel, to create a more conducive surroundings for lasting peace.
Allison Green: Dr. Khalil, thank you for sharing your expertise and insights with us today.
Dr. Nadia Khalil: Thank you for having me, Allison. It is vital to keep the world’s attention focused on this fragile truce and the need for a lasting solution to the conflict in southern Lebanon.
