Gaza –
The United States (US) used its veto power and thwarted the ceasefire declaration in Gaza, Palestine, which was approved by the majority of UN Security Council members. After the US failed to declare a ceasefire in Gaza, Israel continued its attacks on southern Gaza.
Reported AFP and ReutersSunday (10/12/2023), Israeli forces attacked the Gaza the south where hundreds of thousands of civilians have fled and sought refuge from Israeli bombing and heavy fighting with Hamas militants in northern Gaza.
Humanitarian aid groups have warned of an ‘apocalypse-like’ humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories and warned the region is on the verge of being overwhelmed by disease and famine. Hamas, which rules Gaza, said that Israel had launched a series of “extremely violent attacks” targeting the southern town of Khan Younis and the road from there to Rafah near the Gaza-Egypt border.

A source close to Hamas and Palestinian militant Islamic Jihad told AFP that the two groups were involved in ‘fierce clashes’ with Israeli troops on Sunday near Khan Younis. A journalist AFP reported an attack in the area.
In addition, Israel has ordered residents of Khan Younis out of the city center and shelled the area overnight. Israel claims its attacks are progressing.
National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi said Israeli forces had killed at least 7,000 Hamas militants. However, he did not explain where the calculation came from.
At least 17,700 people, mostly women and children, have died in two months of fighting in the region. The Israeli attack was claimed to be in response to the Hamas attack on Israel which killed 1,200 people on October 7.
Israel on Saturday said 137 captives remained in the Palestinian territories. With few safety options, people in the Gaza Strip have sought refuge in hospitals since Saturday.
In the northern part of Gaza City, thousands of people took refuge in Al-Shifa hospital, which no longer functions and was partially destroyed in an Israeli attack last month. Hundreds of makeshift tents made from scraps of cloth and plastic filled the hospital’s courtyard and garden amid collapsed walls.
Resident Suheil Abu Dalfa (56) said he was fleeing massive bombing by Israeli planes and tanks.
“This is just crazy. A bullet hit the house and injured my 20-year-old son,” he told AFP.
“We evacuated to the Old City, everything was just strikes and destruction, we didn’t know where to go. We didn’t know if they would storm the hospital again,” he continued.
In central Gaza, Hamas health authorities said on Saturday that 71 bodies had arrived at Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Hospital in Deir al-Balah within 24 hours. Meanwhile in the southern region, 62 bodies have arrived at the Nasser hospital in Khan Younis.
A correspondent AFP at the hospital saw a child on a makeshift stretcher and others waiting for treatment on the floor, while firefighters outside tried to extinguish the burning building hit by Israeli attacks.
