Ceasefire agreement reached in Ain al-Hilweh camp in southern Lebanon after bloody confrontations

A ceasefire agreement in Ain al-Hilweh camp in southern Lebanon

A source from the Hamas movement revealed, on Friday, that a ceasefire agreement had been reached in the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in the city of Sidon, southern Lebanon, after bloody confrontations between the National Security Forces of the Fatah movement and armed groups.

The source told Anadolu Agency, preferring not to mention his name, that “a meeting was held today in the city of Sidon between the Fatah and Hamas movements to discuss the new situation in the camp.” He added, “The militants were pressured from all directions to cease fire in the camp, and a ceasefire was also agreed upon at the meeting, and this succeeded despite some minor violations.”

For its part, the “Palestinian Joint Action Committee for National and Islamic Forces” (which includes representatives of all factions) in Sidon, on Friday, affirmed its “commitment to establishing the ceasefire.”

In a statement carried by the National News Agency (governmental), the authority stressed its adherence to “its decision to strengthen the joint force of the national and Islamic political frameworks to carry out the tasks assigned to it.”

On Friday, a cautious calm prevailed in the Ain al-Hilweh camp, interspersed with intermittent gunfire, after armed clashes renewed yesterday, Thursday, after a lull that lasted about a month, following bloody confrontations between the National Security Forces and Fatah members on the one hand, and armed “Islamic” factions on the other hand. At the end of last July.

More than 20 people were injured, including three in critical condition in the camp, as a result of renewed clashes, while the camp witnessed a massive displacement movement.

A military source in the Lebanese army had previously told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that “all roads leading to the Ain al-Hilweh camp are cut off, and there are strict security measures in the Sidon region, and exceptional traffic measures taken since last night with the renewed clashes, and they will continue until Calm returns.”

The “Ain al-Hilweh” Palestinian refugee camp was established in 1948, and is the largest in Lebanon, as it includes about 50,000 registered refugees, according to the United Nations, while unofficial estimates indicate that its population exceeds 70,000.

It is noteworthy that the Lebanese security forces surround the Palestinian camps in southern Lebanon, but do not enter them, according to a previous agreement on that. The joint security force, consisting of several factions, is responsible for maintaining security and handing over wanted persons to the Lebanese authorities.
