“CDU Renominates Ursula Von der Leyen for Head of the European Commission”

Her party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of Germany, has decided to re-nominate her for the head of the EC

The prospect of Ursula Von der Leyen being the head of the European Commission for another five years has taken on a very real shape, writes Trud bg.

This is possible after her party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of Germany, has decided to raise again her candidacy for the most responsible post in the European Union after the European Parliament elections in 2024 – the major newspapers along the Spree, Seine and Tiber concluded together.

“I haven’t decided yet, now is not the right time!” – modestly stated the head of the European executive and doctor of gynecologist to the reporters waiting for her at the entrance of the CDU headquarters in Berlin. And they had asked her the question whether she herself would run for office again, after her party insisted at the held special meeting that she occupy the responsible post for a second consecutive term.

Naturally the writing fraternity could not get from the experienced politician any more vague answer than the above, simply because Von der Leyen is the proverbial cautious woman and wants to be sure of victory.

At least for now, according to observers in the major European capitals, this victory is quite possible, since in the first place behind her candidacy are already the two major parties of Germany and the granite pedestal of the European People’s Party, which should raise and elect Von der Leyen as president next year of the EC in the European Parliament – CDU and CSU.

Their union was reached after the leader of the German Christian Socialists and leader of the EPP, Manfred Weber, refused to run for “prime minister” the head of the European Parliament, Roberta Mezzola.

She lacked experience in the executive power, and it did not work because of the corruption scandals in the institution she now manages, argued Weber, swallowing her friction in recent years with Von der Leyen, who often ranted against him.

In the second place, the success of the former Minister of Defense of Germany, doctor of gynecologist and mother of seven children is almost a foregone conclusion, since the current “traffic light government” of the country, i.e. a coalition supported by left, centrist and right formations, firmly stood behind her office of Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Of course, in their comments about von der Leyen’s future after October 31, 2024, when her current term expires, the media in Berlin, Paris and Rome do not hide that there are still obstacles in her way to the helm of the EU almost until 2030 Mr.

It is mainly about the political elections in the fall in Spain, Poland and Bavaria, and their results could shake the emerging unity of the EPP around the re-candidacy of the head of the EC.

But the predictions for the outcome of the vote, especially in Poland, give some hope to the optimists among her supporters, according to which the winner will be the now opposition formation “Civil Platform” of the country’s former prime minister and former president of the European Council, Donald Tusk.

And observers consider him to be one of the EPP’s most powerful activists, and there was no way he would not support von der Leyen, even to please his German friends – support that would guarantee her a second term.

According to the Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera”, it is no wonder that the now-declaring nationalist European formations, whose informal leader is already considered the prime minister in Rome, Giorgia Meloni, will also vote for her.
