The Bremen CDU parliamentary group wants to take legal action against the supplementary budget of the state of Bremen and go to the State Court of Justice. According to the Christian Democrats, taking on new debts of three billion euros from last March violates the debt brake enshrined in Bremen’s constitution.
Debt to fight climate change
With the additional debt, the red-green-red state government wants to fight climate change in the coming years, as well as the financial consequences for the citizens of the Ukraine war. The so-called debt brake actually prohibits taking out such high new loans – but there are exceptions in emergency situations. According to the state government, this is currently the case because of climate change.
The CDU denies this, because after all this problem has been known for decades, according to their budget politician Jens Eckhoff. According to Eckhoff, it is also illegal to take on new debts for several years.
