CDU Celebrates Victory in Hessian State Elections, Takes Constituency from Greens

Cheers at the CDU election party: The party clearly wins the state elections – and also takes a constituency from the Greens in Frankfurt.

The Hessian Prime Minister and CDU top candidate Boris Rhein and his party are not only the election winners in Hesse – he also defended his direct mandate for the state parliament in Frankfurt VI on Sunday.

According to the preliminary official final results, Rhein won 40.2 percent of the constituency votes and was therefore well ahead of his competitors. It is not the first time that Rhein has won this constituency – he was already successful there in the 2018 state elections, although not as head of government at that time.

In almost all other Frankfurt constituencies, Rhein’s party colleagues were able to triumph in the evening:

In constituency I, Uwe Serke (CDU) won his direct mandate again with 34.7 percent: he gained eight percentage points. In constituency II, CDU politician Tanja Jost (27.1 percent) took the mandate from previous constituency representative Miriam Dahlke (25.8 percent). In constituency III, Ralph-Norbert Bartelt (CDU) defended his direct mandate with 31.2 percent of the first votes (an increase of 4.2 percentage points). The CDU incumbent also secured his place in the state parliament in constituency IV: Michael Boddenberg gained 8.4 percentage points – received 35.2 percent of the vote in the evening. The only Frankfurt constituency that did not go to the CDU on Sunday is the city’s fifth constituency: here the Green incumbent Markus Bocklet won with 31.7 percent of the first votes. Loading…

The CDU also dominated the second votes in the preliminary official final result on Sunday evening: the Christian Democrats received 30.2 percent of the second votes (an increase of 3.3), followed by the Greens, who received 23.7 percent of the second votes.

The Greens grew slightly more than the CDU, gaining 3.9 percentage points compared to the election five years ago. The SPD (15.1 percent), AfD (10.4 percent), FDP (6.4 percent) and the Left (6 percent) all lost slightly in terms of second votes.
