Mexico City. The people of Mexico City “have been becoming conservative,” said President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and he attributed this change in position that he considers to several reasons.
“Mexico City was a politically avant-garde city, always. Well, they elected me here (in 2000) despite being born, with great pride, in Tabasco, they have always supported me, always always.”
Also the capital of the country, he recalled, was the cradle of the social programs that are applied throughout the country today.
However, in the neoliberal period, Mexico City became a conservative space, where—from their perspective—some media also supported, some sectors of the middle class are “aspirational and conservative,” it is “the headquarters of the fifís” and even the universities turned to that trend.
He showed a survey where the average acceptance in the country he has is 77 percent. And in states like Guerrero it has 86 percent approval, first place; but Mexico City occupies the penultimate place with 63 percent in favor, only above Aguascalientes, where it has 62 percent and is the state with the least approval.
“In Querétaro (also the lower ones) it is understood, not only because Maximiliano went to take refuge there, everything has its reason for being, I do not deny it; But look, Mexico City does not fail, 63, but the average is 77, and in last place is Aguascalientes with 62. How can we explain this? “It’s just that there has been a bombing for some time, and it has its effects.”
He explained that the neoliberal project “was not only the economic policy, it was the desire to privatize everything. And this very fraternal and progressive city also has the problem that this is where the most important means of manipulation in the country are concentrated.”
He added: “With the neoliberal policy they took over the universities (…) Here they moved a lot to the right during the neoliberal period. Well the universities, the UNAM, incredible!”
Another element, he added, is that the capital is where there is the greatest concentration of the middle class, thanks to the fact that it is in the city where there are greater possibilities of income.
“Poverty has been fought a lot here, but there are sectors, it is not the entire middle class but there are sectors of the middle class, which are very conservative and aspirational.”
He added: “And also here because it is the headquarters of the fifís, there is no way they are going to find a junior like Claudio X González in a state of the Republic. No!”.
