Jakarta, CNNIndonesia —
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warn of the dangers of eating dough flour. Unprocessed flour dough can be contaminated with bacteria including Salmonella.
Pre-processed flour dough looks safe to taste. But what needs to be realized, flour dough is still a raw food ingredient.
“Raw (unbaked) flour used to make dough or flour solutions can be contaminated with germs such as Salmonella, but Salmonella germs are killed when flour is cooked or baked,” the CDC writes.
The CDC lists the dangers of eating flour dough including making you sick after eating it.
Called ‘outbreaks’ or extraordinary events, as many as 11 states in the US have reported health problems related to flour dough. Dozens of people complained of illness, including three people being treated in hospital.
As CNN reports, the CDC says the scale of the ‘outbreak’ is likely to be greater than the number of cases reported. Most of the patients interviewed said they had eaten the dough in the week before their illness.
Currently, the CDC team is investigating the specific brand of flour that triggers the ‘outbreak’.
Meanwhile, the CDC provides a number of things to pay attention to regarding the dangers of eating flour dough.
1. Don’t eat even a little raw flour dough
We recommend that you bake or process a new flour dough consumed. Follow the instructions on how to process properly including temperature and baking time.
2. Use clean cooking utensils
Make sure the cooking utensils used are clean. Wash bowls, utensils and surfaces that came in contact with the flour mixture with warm water and soap.
Before kneading or touching the dough, first wash your hands with soap and water.
3. Separate
You need to separate the flour dough from the food that will not be processed. This is to avoid contamination.
4. Contact a doctor or visit the nearest clinic
Apart from adults, children are also prone to getting sick if they try the flour dough. Immediately go to the nearest doctor or clinic if the child shows the following symptoms.
– Diarrhea and fever with a temperature over 38 degrees Celsius.
– Diarrhea for more than 3 days and not showing signs of improvement.
– Diarrhea accompanied by blood in the stool.
– Vomiting until it’s hard to drink.
– There are signs of dehydration such as, little urine, dry mouth and throat and dizziness when standing.
This series of signs includes the dangers of eating flour dough. For now, the dough should be processed first and then consumed.
