CDC Director Endorses RSV Vaccines for Older Adults: Facts and Prevention

Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Rochelle P. Walensky, endorsed the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations for the use of new respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines from GSK and Pfizer in people 60 years of age and older.

They explain that this group of people can receive a single dose of the vaccine after discussing it with their healthcare provider and determining if it is right for them.

Adults at higher risk of severe illness from RSV include older adults, those with chronic heart or lung disease, people with weakened immune systems, and those who reside in nursing homes or long-term care facilities.

FACTS ABOUT RSV ACCORDING TO CDC

It is estimated that each year RSV causes between 60,000 and 160,000 hospitalizations and between 6,000 and 10,000 deaths in older adults.

These new vaccines, the first licensed in the United States to protect against RSV, are expected to be available in the fall.

They offer an opportunity to protect older adults from serious illness caused by RSV, especially at a time when it is likely circulating multiple respiratory infections.

They should also discuss with their adult patients what other vaccinations will be needed this fall to prevent respiratory infections.

According to Medlineplus, respiratory syncytial virus, also known as respiratory syncytial virus, is a common viral illness.

It usually causes mild cold-like symptoms. But it can cause serious lung infections, especially in babies, older adults, and people with serious medical problems.
