WASHINGTON – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified nine cases of monkeypox in seven states, officials said Thursday: the cases were reported in California, Florida, Massachusetts, New York , Utah, Virginia and Washington.
“The United States has the resources we need to respond to monkeypox in this country at this time. We have been preparing for this type of outbreak for decades,” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said during a meeting.
Walensky mentioned two vaccines that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) against monkeypox and are kept in the Strategic National Stockpile. The US has 100 million doses of a vaccine, called ACAM2000. The second, called Jynmeos, is a vaccine approved by the FDA for use against monkeypox in particular, and some such doses have already been distributed.
