(San Francisco = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Tae-jong = The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advisory body recommended the RSV vaccine ‘Abrysvo’ developed by Pfizer for pregnant women to protect newborns from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). recommended to be vaccinated.

On this day, the CDC Advisory Committee, with the approval of 11 out of 12 members, recommended Abrisvo vaccination for women at 32 to 36 weeks of pregnancy from September to January of the following year, when RSV is most prevalent.

Accordingly, once CDC Director Mandy Cohen gives final approval, Abrisvo will be distributed to the market and administered to pregnant women.

Abrisvo, which promotes the production of antibodies in mothers, is a vaccine to protect newborns, and was the first in the world to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month.

The CDC advisory committee recommended Abrisvo vaccination for pregnant women because clinical trial data showed that the effect lasts for six months.

It was found that when women are vaccinated at 32 to 36 weeks of pregnancy, the risk of their newborn suffering a serious disease from RSV within 3 months of birth is reduced by 91% and by 77% by 6 months.

RSV is a highly contagious virus that causes respiratory infections. It usually begins to spread in the fall, peaks in the winter, and spreads until the following spring.

If infected, symptoms similar to a cold, such as a runny nose, fever, and cough, may appear, but infants and the elderly may develop more serious symptoms such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia.

Every year, 160,000 people around the world die from RSV, and in particular, infants and children under the age of five are known to be at the highest risk of developing serious disease from this virus.

In the United States alone, it is estimated that 58,000 to 80,000 children under the age of 5 are hospitalized with RSV infection every year.

Previously, the CDC approved the RSV vaccine developed by global pharmaceutical companies GSK and Pfizer for those aged 60 or older to be vaccinated in June.
