CDC Adds New Symptoms Of Corona Virus, Here’s the Details

Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – When the corona virus was first identified in China, patients seemed to develop at least one of three symptoms: fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath.

However, these data are broken by the fact that most patients who are tested for the virus have more severe symptoms and require hospitalization.

As reported by Business Insider on Sunday (28/6), when the virus developed into a pandemic, doctors have observed more additional symptoms.

Some patients report muscle pain, while others experience swelling in the fingers to look like frostbitten.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated the official list of the symptoms of Covid-19 since the pandemic erupted with research carried out every time there were the latest developments.

More recently, the CDC added fatigue, diarrhea, nasal congestion or runny nose, and nausea or vomiting in the Covid-19 symptoms list.

The scientists also found that the virus can infect the heart, kidneys, liver and intestines. Corona virus can also cause additional complications such as heart damage or acute kidney failure.

According to the CDC, these symptoms usually appear two days to two weeks after exposure to the virus.

The following is an overview of how each symptom manifests among commonly reported Covid-19 patients.

1. Fever or cold

A report from the World Health Organization in February found that of nearly 56,000 confirmed cases in laboratories in China, about 88% of patients had a fever.

2. Cough

The WHO report found that 68% of patients suffer from dry cough. But a study in Wenzhou, China found that about one third of patients (13 out of 53) suffered from a wet cough.

3. Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

About 20% of patients experience shortness of breath, which doctors consider to be one of the most alarming symptoms.
Difficulty in breathing can be an early sign of pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), an often fatal disease that may require intubation.

4. Fatigue

The WHO report found that 38% of patients experienced fatigue due to Covid-19. A study in Wuhan found these symptoms to be more common: 70% of patients experience fatigue.

5. Pain in muscles

In a study in Wuhan, 35% of patients experienced muscle aches or pains, although only 10% of patients in the Wenzhou study showed the same symptoms.

6. Headaches

Sore throat and headaches seem to affect the same number of patients: around 14%, according to WHO. A study in Wuhan, for example, found that around 17% of patients had a sore throat, while less than 7% had a headache.

7. Loss of sense of taste or smell

The CDC includes loss of sense of taste and smell as symptoms of Covid-19, but it is still unclear how common these symptoms occur.

The consideration is still in the middle after a study in May showed that around 53% of corona virus patients experience sense or smell sensory dysfunction. Research in Spain shows that almost 40% of Covid-19 patients lose their senses, rather than 12% of patients who only get the common cold.

8. Sore throat

Sore throat and headaches seem to affect the same number of patients: around 14%, according to WHO. The Wuhan study found that around 17% of patients suffer from sore throats, while less than 7% suffer from headaches.

9. Nosed or watery nose

According to WHO, nasal congestion is not a common symptom, but some patients suffer from it. Nearly 5% of patients in the WHO report complain of nasal congestion.

10. Nausea or vomiting

The hospital records gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting which may be an early sign of symptoms of a viral infection.
Only 5% of corona virus patients in the WHO report experienced nausea or vomiting, and another 4% had diarrhea.

11. Diarrhea

Nearly 13% of patients in the Wenzhou study had diarrhea. Likewise, a study of patients in Wuhan found that 10% had diarrhea and nausea, while less than 4% experienced vomiting. The study found that diarrhea and nausea usually appear one to two days before fever and breathing difficulties occur.
