CDA party leader reveals during debate: Western Scheldt tunnel will become toll-free sooner

Last year, Minister Harbers and Deputy Harry van der Maas alluded to the possibility that the tunnel would become toll-free sooner, but at the time this was said with a slap on the wrist. It would only be possible if several factors were favorable. “All lights must be green,” Van der Maas said at the time. Bontenbal’s comment during the debate makes it appear that these last obstacles are now off the table.

Seven party leaders defended their positions tonight in the Debate of the South, organized by Omroep Brabant, L1 and Omroep Zeeland. In addition to Bontenbal, Dilan Yeşilgöz (VVD), Caroline van der Plas (BBB), Geert Wilders (PVV), Rob Jetten (D66), Lilian Marijnissen (SP) and Esther Ouwehand (Party for the Animals) also participated in the debate.

The major absentees at the Debate of the South were Frans Timmermans (PvdA/GroenLinks) and Pieter Omtzigt (NSC). Both party leaders have been approached several times to participate, but indicated that they could not make time for the Debate of the South.
