The two-meter-high crucifix, according to the party’s religious cultural heritage, was destroyed with fireworks on the night from Saturday to Sunday.
Little is left of the statue. The CDA in Oss says it is ‘particularly touched’. The party is donating five hundred euros for the replacement of the antique statue. “We hope that the perpetrators will be found and punished,” the party said on Facebook.
“This statue is more than a piece of wood. It is a piece of history, a piece of identity and a beloved and iconic point in Lithoijen ”, the party writes.
The owner of the garden in which the statue is located, Gert van den Berg, is gutted. He speaks to Omroep Brabant about an ‘iconic image’ that has been lost. “It’s such a shame. Debris lay everywhere. It hurts me quite that the image is gone. It’s so pointless, why would you destroy this statue with so much violence? It is a pity.”
The oak statue by artist Piet Verdonk was placed in 1947.
CDA MP Rene Peters, who was born in Oss, is also outraged. On Twitter he writes: “But what makes me say this angry. If there is a fundraising campaign to replace the statue, write me down! ”
Theologian and SP board member in Oss Jan van den Eijnden finds the destruction ‘too disgusting for words; if it is wantonness, it is too stupid for words. In both cases I am beginning to long for the medieval pillory. But first find the perpetrators, ‘he writes on Twitter.
