The party board of the CDA has nominated former Member of Parliament Hans Huibers as new chairman. He therefore has a good chance of being elected at the autumn congress on 11 December.
Huibers (60) was a member of parliament for the CDA between 1989 and 1994. He was put forward by the youth organization CDJA and when he took office, at 28 years old, he was the youngest member of the CDA faction. After 1994, he continued his career in educational organizations and in business. Huibers is now a leader in the food industry.
The CDA has been without a party chairman since Rutger Ploum resigned. He did so because of the disappointing result in the elections to the House of Representatives on 17 March. The CDA lost four seats and dropped from 19 to 15.
The CDA has had a difficult year with a party leader election that was narrowly won by Hugo de Jonge, who passed the baton to Wopke Hoekstra just before the elections. His campaign was uneventful. The party also lost the popular MP Pieter Omtzigt, who is now a one-man faction in the House.
