CD Projekt’s Translators Cause Controversy in Cyberpunk 2077 Ukrainian Localization

There can be few more unpleasant situations than the one CD Projekt’s translators got the company into.

The latest update of Cyberpunk 2077 brought a lot of new things and changes to the world of Night City. So far, everyone is in the picture, but the situation is starting to get more complicated because one of the new features of 2.0 was the Ukrainian localization.

The Ukrainian company SBT Localization was responsible for the translation, which previously managed games such as Darkest Dungeon, The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe and Baldur’s Gate 3. Given the latter, it is not surprising that CD Projekt RED commissioned them, but they interpreted their Cyberpunk 2077 task quite freely.

A Zone Games according to his report, several dialogues included anti-Russian expressions that were not there before. For example, one of the police dialogues in the original sounds like: “couldn’t all the assholes from the Badlands finally die”. From this sentence, the translator removed the term “ass” and replaced it with “rusnia”, which is a popular swear word for Russian in Ukraine. Several similar texts were included, which refer to the war and the Russian invaders. A new graffiti was interpreted by many as an anti-Russian symbol.

The developers of Cyberpunk 2077 apologized for what happened in a statement:

“The Ukrainian localization of the game contains several lines that may be offensive to Russian players. They were not written by CD Projekt RED staff and do not reflect our views. We are already working on an update to remove them. We would like to apologize for the situation and will take steps to in order to prevent similar cases from occurring.”

It is important to add here that the employees of CD Projekt RED do not support the Russian occupation in the least. At the beginning of the war, they spoke openly against the invasion of Ukraine and supported organizations helping the civilian population with a significant amount of money. After that, it wouldn’t be surprising if they themselves placed political messages in Cyberpunk 2077, but this is not the case now.
