It’s no secret that CD Projekt is gradually moving a large part of its human resources to the development of the new Witcher after the completion of the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. He gave an interesting insight into the functioning of the studio and the thoughts of its management in an interview for the magazine InvenGlobal technical director of CD Projekt Colin Walder. He revealed that the studio experienced difficult times especially after the release of Cyberpunk 2077which suffered from significant technical problems, especially on last-generation consoles, which resulted in the game being pulled from the PlayStation Store.
According to Walder, it was difficult to maintain high morale in the team during this period, which was needed due to the necessary repair work. But a problematic edition of Cyberpunk should also result in a number of lessons learned, which the studio will use in the development of the new Witcher, codenamed Polaris. For example, there was supposed to be a change in approach to development for consoles. In the case of The Witcher, the individual console ports should go through thorough internal testing from the very beginning, following the example of the PC version. It was the neglect of this step, according to Walder, that contributed to Cyberpunk 2077’s problems on consoles.
The technical director of the studio also commented on overtime and crunchi, which the developers did not avoid when launching Cyberpunk. In this direction as well, Walder talks about a certain change in strategy, which should prevent these problems with the use of other approaches. Whether CD Projekt lives up to these words is currently a question. The release of the new Witcher is still a long way off. However, it is clear that the company does not take the situation it faced with Cyberpunk lightly and does not want to repeat it at any cost.
