Although the title went down in gaming history as the worst game to debut, according to CD Project Red, it wasn’t that bad.
In a recent interview, Projekt Red’s vice president for PR stated that he thought the reception of the game was not fair. According to Michał Platkow-Gilewski, CD Projekt Red’s VP of PR, Cyberpunk 2077’s release wasn’t nearly as bad as critics have made it out to be.

A GamesIndustry.bizIn an interview with Platkow-Gilewski, he attributed the game’s poor reception to bandwagoning, and even stated that, in his view, at a certain point it was downright “cool” to hate the game.
“I actually think Cyberpunk was a lot better when it came out than it was received. And even the first reviews were positive. Then it became cool not to love. We went from hero to zero very quickly. That was the difficult moment. We didn’t know what was going on.”
In comparison, however, we all remember that the game was so poorly received that Sony was forced to remove it from the PlayStation Store just days after its release. And the game was only returned to Sony’s digital store after more than six months of developers working on fixing the game.
Despite his surprising comments, however, Platkow-Gilewski admitted that the game “had its issues” and assured players that the studio was committed to delivering a quality product, even if the initial showing was rather weak. He justified the dewy start by saying:
“The outbreak started while we were still making Cyberpunk, but now we have time to work on these tools to develop them to establish best practices. It’s an interesting time.”
As previously reported, the studio is currently preparing for the release of Cyberpunk 2077’s first and only DLC, Phantom Liberty, which will debut on September 26, 2023, and is available for pre-order now. The DLC is also significant because it offers the studio a unique opportunity to give a second chance to players who were initially put off by the game’s shaky start.
