CD Projekt Red does not regret making Cyberpunk 2077 a first-person game, as opposed to the third-person Witcher franchise, but the company has not yet decided on Cyberpunk 2, codenamed Orion.
During a call with investors, Cyberpunk 2077 quest director Pavel Sasko, who will be working on Orion, was asked whether CD Projekt Red was going to add a switch from third to first person in the new game, and whether the company regrets that that it is not present in the current Cyberpunk.
There are no regrets on our part. We wanted Cyberpunk to have its own personality and stand out as something different. These days, games are sold through YouTube, Twitch and screenshots, and this is a way that can be used to show players your personality and uniqueness.
Sasko continued: “What I wanted to say is that the first-person perspective is a core characteristic of Cyberpunk, and that’s how players perceive it too. It’s also noticeably different from The Witcher, and that helped us create an identity for the product.”
The quest director did not disclose details regarding Orion, but suggested that CD Projekt Red has not yet decided on its choice. Explaining why the team only included first-person mode in Cyberpunk 2077, Sasko added: “But we still have to figure it out with Orion.”
Of course, a sequel is still years away, as CD Projekt Red is currently focused on the next Witcher game, Polaris, which won’t be released until 2025. Orion will be developed at the company’s new North American studio, which is currently under construction.
However, Orion development has officially begun. CD Projekt Red chief creative officer Adam Badowski also said at the presentation that the game has reached the “level of conceptual design.”
CD Projekt Red’s Investor Day presentation was quite eventful, although perhaps not as intense as in 2022, when the company announced five new games. However, the company presented the film adaptation of Cyberpunk, confirmed that sales of Cyberpunk 2077 exceeded 25 million copies, and announced that CEO Adam Kiciński was leaving his post.
