On why Cyberpunk 2077 is getting only one major expansion, CD Projekt execs told in a conversation with investors as part of its semi-annual financial report.

When CDP heads were asked what Phantom Liberty sales figures could convince the company to take on the next paid DLC for the game, they said that the decision on this matter had already been made. And it is connected primarily with the fact that the developers will not deal with the proprietary REDengine engine in the near future.

The decision has been made, and made a long time ago, as we announced earlier. Neither the second nor the third expansion, we will not, Phantom Liberty will be the only one.

And it has nothing to do with financial performance, or with how satisfied we are with sales, or with anything like that. To be honest, this decision was technological.

After all, this is the last time we work on the REDengine engine, at least for now. For the foreseeable future, we’re going to be working with Epic’s Unreal Engine, and that’s a key reason why this DLC will be the only one.

The heads of the company also noted that, in general, the transition to Unreal Engine 5 is going well, including due to the fact that many CD Projekt RED employees are already familiar with the engine from Epic Games.

CDPR’s first UE5 project will be the next major game in the Witcher franchise, codenamed Polaris. Judging by given in the graph report, by the end of July 2023, about a third of the entire CD Projekt development staff was already working on this game.

Company executives have confirmed that most of the team currently working on the Phantom Liberty will be transferred to Polaris after the release of the add-on. However, they emphasized that Cyberpunk 2077 will continue to be supported for some time after the release of the addon.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is due out September 26 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
