CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiciński Discusses Future Plans and Strategy for The Witcher and Cyberpunk

CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiciński answered the magazine’s questions in detail Parquet in a long interview published before the end of 2023. The main topic was the future, strategy and attitude of Polish developers towards the further development of the two main brands – The Witcher and Cyberpunk. For Kicińský, it was apparently the last interview he gave to someone in the mentioned position, because he will resign from the position of CEO the day after tomorrow and leave the management to Adam Badowski and Michal Nowakowský. However, he still wants to be involved as a member of the supervisory board and it is likely that the plans he set for 2024 will copy the company’s general strategy and no one will come up with any drastic changes. This should also apply to acquisitions, to which Kiciński expressed his rejection and stated that CD Projekt still wants to remain an independent company.

One of the questions was aimed at the number of employees, whose status decreased slightly in 2023. According to Kicińský, the number should increase again in 2024, but for now only very sporadically. “I would rather say that the number of employees will remain stable because some people will be moving between projects,” explained the outgoing director, adding that a more visible increase in the number of employees will not come until 2025. This should be reflected in the progress of work on the Polaris project, what the next part of The Witcher will be, however, neither players nor the media should expect any more concrete news for now. “Regarding the release dates, after the release of Cyberpunk 2077, there were thoughts that we would announce them later rather than sooner,” added Kiciński. A certain caution can be felt from the answers, which according to previous incidents is definitely in place and everything will be reminded again when the time of the new Witcher or the next Cyberpunk comes. However, we should still expect the standard marketing campaign and the efforts of the developers to build enough interest in a particular game.

“We have always had a clear position, supported by the regulations placed in the company’s articles of association. We are not interested in being incorporated into a larger entity,” said Adam Kiciński.

As for the aforementioned acquisitions, CD Projekt is currently not planning any. Although Kiciński stated that the company would never resist various opportunities that could accelerate the overall strategy, but in acquisitions that would only incorporate already done company to the CD Projekt group, they say they see no value. On the other hand, CD Projekt is not interested in becoming part of a larger entity either, and Kiciński literally stated that any speculations about the sale of CD Projekt are just rumors. “We have always had a clear position, supported by the regulations placed in the company’s articles of association. We are not interested in being incorporated into some larger entity,” explained Kiciński. From this point of view, the position that CD Projekt has won according to Kicińský is important, namely independence, which is one of the most important attributes of CD Projekt’s own existence. It is also not threatened by a lack of funds, so CD Projekt currently does not even need to acquire new resources and, on the contrary, is thinking about expanding the scope of business activities beyond the scope of computer or console games.

In the case of series or films inspired by games from CD Projekt, Kiciński only recapitulated, but he also mentioned the Hadar project, which is supposed to stand apart from Cyberpunk and The Witcher and the whole world for which the company is preparing itself. Unfortunately, nothing has changed in the fact that Hadar is in the concept phase, when the world and its history together with graphic designs are being created, but the development itself is not taking place. The only thing that Kiciński hinted at is a genre placement in the space of another big RPG with an open world, which, however, should not compete with what CD Projekt is already dealing with historically. At the same time, players are said to be waiting for another interesting pop culture concept, but we are still a bit in the dark.
