In the week of September 7 to 13, 2,704 people died. Also last week, no more people died than normal, the researchers estimate. By comparison, 5,084 people died in the first week of April, when Covid-19 claimed many lives.
The number of victims of the new coronavirus has been increasing in recent weeks, but is nowhere near the death rate in the middle of the first wave. Last week, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) knew 25 people had died from the virus. Halfway through this week, the researchers already arrive at 37 deaths. In the first week of April, the number of victims was much higher. Then, according to the RIVM, about 1000 people succumbed to the virus.
Not all deaths caused by Covid-19 are known to the RIVM. Not everyone who dies from the virus has been tested for it.
