CBS: More than 200,000 millionaires in the Netherlands in 2018 | NOW

The Netherlands had 207,400 millionaires in 2018, compared to 180,900 millionaires a year earlier. Converted, 2.7 percent of households were millionaires two years ago, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports Wednesday.

The average millionaire household had around 2.5 million euros in wealth in 2018. The average non-millionaire had assets of 119,000 euros. This gives millionaires an average of 21 times more wealth than their poorer countryman.

The calculations include the value of assets such as shares, but also the value of the owner-occupied home. Furthermore, any mortgage debt is deducted from it.

The biggest asset of the average millionaire is the so-called substantial interest. This concerns, for example, entrepreneurs who have a majority interest in their company.

Increase due to increased house value and share prices

The increase from 2017 to 2018 was mainly due to increased share prices and increased house value.

In any case, the number of millionaires in the Netherlands is very dependent on the state of the housing market and the financial markets. For example, the number of millionaires fell between 2008 and 2014 almost every year due to falling house prices and stock markets.

With the recently plummeted stock prices surrounding the corona crisis, the number of millionaires is likely to come under pressure this year.
