CBS: juvenile delinquency is decreasing, but serious crimes have increased in recent years

Crime among minors and young adults has decreased over the past six years, compared to the previous 15 years. This is reported by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), which does have a comment on those figures. Serious juvenile crime has increased again in recent years.

According to Statistics Netherlands, in the period 2015 to 2020, juvenile crime decreased among most population groups, in most neighborhoods and for most types of crime, compared to the years before 2015. Furthermore, the number of convicted minors decreased by a third from 2015 to 2019.

More serious crimes

The decline in juvenile crime has not continued in all areas in recent years. This is especially true for serious crimes. For example, the number of juvenile offenders convicted of manslaughter has increased by more than half since 2016 to 45 in 2019. In the same period, the number of convicted juvenile offenders of property crime, such as theft or fraud with violence, also increased by 13 percent.

Furthermore, the number of young perpetrators of serious assault has remained the same in recent years and there were more young suspects of weapon incidents last year, compared to 2019.
