More than 230 undocumented persons, including several unaccompanied children, were detained in the last two days. in several operations carried out by the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in safe houses in the Rio Grande Valley sector, Texas, the agency reported this Thursday.
The arrests occurred in the context of three CBP agent operatives, who responded to various reports about the presence of undocumented persons hiding in safe houses.
One of the reports made on Wednesday morning warned of a possible Immigrant Hideout in Edinburg, Texas. CBP officers requested the assistance of the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.
When the authorities arrived at the presumed hiding place, they observed several individuals trying to flee the residence. Upon entering, they discovered 36 undocumented foreigners confined in a small area.
Further investigation revealed that two people had flu-like symptoms and another person claimed to have epilepsy.
In the group were immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
Hours later, CBP agents close to the city of Mission found 130 immigrants. The group consisted mainly of families and unaccompanied children natives of Central America, highlighted the agency in a statement.
In another operation carried out last Tuesday, CBP officers together with the Police Department of Pharr found 71 illegal immigrants inside a house. In the group it was discovered that three children were traveling alone.
CBP stressed that “even with the spread of the COVID-19 virus, human traffickers continue to attempt these blatant attempts without regard for the lives they endanger and the health of our nation’s citizens.”
