Edinson Cavani may face a multi-game suspension. The English football association FA has launched an investigation into a racist text that the Manchester United striker posted on social media on Sunday.
Shortly after the 3-2 victory over Southampton – Cavani helped his side as a substitute with two goals to a spectacular victory – the Uruguayan thanked a friend of his in a story on Instagram for a congratulation with the words: “Thanks, negrito (Thanks, little black man) “.
33-year-old Cavani deleted the message, but may not escape punishment. Under FA rules, it is a criminal offense to refer to anyone’s ethnicity, color, race or nationality.
Last year, Manchester City playmaker Bernardo Silva was suspended one game for a similar incident. The Portuguese had posted – and not much later also deleted – a message in which he compared teammate Benjamin Mendy to a doll on the packaging of sweets.
At the beginning of this season, however, the FA tightened the rules for racist language and behavior on social media. It means that a player can be suspended for at least three games.
The use of the word negro Cavani’s compatriot Luis Suárez cost eight games suspension in 2011. The then Liverpool attacker had let himself go into the field against Manchester United’s Patrice Evra.
