What about that electric Ford Mustang again?

That took some getting used to for all fans of the most iconic Ford. For Ford’s first all-electric model, the Mustang name took on a new meaning. The Ford Mustang Mach-E has nothing to do with cubic inches and pony cars, it only comes with an electric motor.

The arrival of the electric Ford Mustang Mach-E was already known, but Ford has now also unveiled an extra exciting version: the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT. It delivers 465 hp, has a torque of 830 Nm, sprints to 100 km / h in 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 200 km / h. The large 88 kWh (net) battery pack makes this fine performance possible.

The appearance is also more spectacular. The Mach-E GT has a special grille, large air scoops, 20-inch alloy wheels and adaptive dampers. It comes in two colors: bright blue and orange. With a full battery, the range of the Ford Mustang Mach-e GT is 500 kilometers. If the battery drains faster than you’d like after a sporty ride, you can ‘refuel’ 119 kilometers with the fast charger in 10 minutes.

How does the new Ford Mustang Mach-E (2021) drive?

As said: we are only allowed to ride with a Ford test driver. Not yet the GT unfortunately, it is a First Edition with 337 hp. Because we don’t steer, we can pay extra attention to the interior. The dashboard has a good look at Tesla: buttons you will not find, a huge touchscreen of 15.5-inch (almost 40 cm) dominates almost the entire center console. Only in front of the driver’s nose is a small digital instrumentation – something that is missing from the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.

We drive through Rotterdam during the evening rush hour, so that the panoramic roof offers a beautiful view of the skyline. But hurry up? No. To let go, Ford has rented a parking garage, so we can see what happens when you let go of 581 Nm on all four wheels. Even now you see that Ford has taken a good look at Tesla. The Tesla Ludicrous Mode is called ‘Untamed’ on the Mustang. Nice idea: a Mustang is a horse that shows its strength untamed in the most sporty position. Such a fast acceleration remains spectacular, but we also get a bit spoiled. Not only various Tesla models, also the nauseatingly fast Porsche Taycan has put our stomach to the test more than the Ford.

The space in the back is sufficient, in the front you sit on fine sports seats. We hope to inform you of our experiences behind the wheel at the beginning of 2021, when the electric Mustang is really in the Netherlands.

Should Tesla be afraid of the Ford Mustang Mach-E?

You don’t have to look purely at the performance. Take the Tesla Model X Performance, the top model with a 95 kWh battery pack and an electric motor that produces 836 hp and 1000 Nm. It takes 2.8 seconds to complete the hundred sprint and has a range of 440 kilometers. The Tesla Model X Performance costs a little more than 107,000 euros. The price of the Mustang Mach-E GT has not yet been announced, but it will not be the bargain of the month.

Does the Ford Mustang Mach-E have any nice gadgets?

It depends on how you look at it. Actually, a gadget is missing, namely the key. How do you still get into your car? You can unlock and lock the car via a special Mustang app on your mobile phone. In the unlikely event that your phone is empty, you don’t have to despair. The Mustang Mach-E can also be opened with a PIN, a feature that expensive American cars had in the past. A keyboard lights up on the B-pillar, so you can still drive away. If you find this too much hassle: if desired, Ford can also supply the Mustang Mach-E with a key.

Up front, where a V8 roars in the traditional Mustang, is an extra luggage compartment with a stopper at the bottom so you can easily rinse it clean. But if it’s up to Ford, you can get the Mustang Mach-E also as a barbecue use. Via the app you can also remotely unlock the front luggage compartment, so that the parcel deliverer can place a package in it.

When is the Ford Mustang Mach-E coming and what’s the price?

Due to corona, the delivery time of the Ford Mustang Mach-E has been considerably delayed. Production did not start until mid-September, at the factory in Mexico. That should actually have happened in the spring.

The first Mustangs will be shipped to Europe at the end of 2020, after which the cars will not be in the showroom until 2021. The price of the Ford Mustang Mach-E is 49,925 euros (rear-wheel drive, range 440 km, battery pack 68 kWh). The Ford Mustang Mach-E with four-wheel drive costs 57,665 euros (same battery pack, range 400 km). The richly equipped First Edition (70,940 euros) is already completely sold out, despite the long delivery time. No fewer than 1800 people have ordered this version in the Netherlands.
