Cautious all-clear: Hardly any participants in Corona demos in Vienna

A car convoy was registered in Vienna for Saturday at 1 p.m. According to the registration, around 1,800 cars should drive off the Ringstrasse twice. The convoy should be a sign against the Corona measures and “for the freedom of assembly”. The background is likely to be the prohibition of several demos in recent weeks by the police.

But: According to the police, only five vehicles came to the meeting point, which was at 11.30 a.m. in St. Marx. That as many actually take part as announced was already considered unlikely in advance. The scene of opponents of the Corona measures, during whose marches right-wing extremists and supporters of conspiracy narratives were spotted again and again, demonstrated on Saturday in Wiener Neustadt (around 600 participants), in Salzburg (around 500 participants) and on Friday in Linz ( around 300 participants).

Not registered “carnival parade”

In miscellaneous Telegram-Groups in the scene were also announced – as on Saturday in Wiener Neustadt – a “walk” under the guise of “carnival parade”. The participants should also bring children with them to make it more difficult for the police to intervene. The announced gathering, which was supposed to start early on Sunday afternoon at Maria-Theriesien-Platz, was not registered with the police in advance.

But even there, according to the police, no participants were seen until 1 p.m. “We are still on site and are ready with an appropriate number of emergency services,” said police spokeswoman Barbara Gass.

In general, the situation in downtown Vienna was relaxed on Sunday lunchtime: Six other, smaller stand rallies at different places should hardly cause any unrest or traffic delays. These include another, smaller rally by opponents of the Corona measures, but also gatherings that deal with the abortion laws in Poland, the situation in Belarus and the situation of refugees on the Greek islands.
