A female dementia patient swallowed her dentures. [사진=Jam Press]There was an incident where a dementia patient swallowed his dentures.
On the 18th (local time), the British media Daily Mail reported on the case of an elderly woman who swallowed dentures. She said the woman appeared to be suffering from dementia and she did not feel any significant pain.
The woman realized that she had dentures inside her body only after visiting the hospital. It is analyzed that she was not aware that she had swallowed dentures because of her past history of dementia, stroke, or lymphoma (malignant tumor) in the central nervous system.
The medical staff questioned the woman’s lack of lower dentures and performed an upper endoscopy and then performed surgery to remove the dentures. The woman underwent ablation for about 2 hours and was discharged the next day.
Experts at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, who treated the woman, said, “Dentures are one of the common foreign objects that adults can swallow. In addition to dentures, you need to be careful not to swallow chicken bones, fish bones, and jewelry.”
Older people who use dentures should be aware that they can be swallowed whole. When a foreign substance enters the body, it is naturally excreted through the esophagus and stomach. However, it is recommended to remove dentures, bone fragments, metal, and needles immediately. These are sharp and hard, and if left unattended, they can damage the esophagus or stomach.
If diagnosis and treatment are delayed, it can lead to not only minor abrasions but also necrosis and blood vessel damage. This can also adversely affect the lungs, such as pneumonia and atelectasis (shrinking due to a decrease in the volume of the lungs).
It is common for adults as well as infants to swallow various foreign substances, so special attention is required. They play with small toys, coins, buttons, beads, etc. in their mouths and swallow them. Even if a child feels a foreign body sensation in the throat or esophagus, it is difficult to describe it like an adult. If a child develops symptoms such as irritability, drooling, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite, or coughing, they should see a doctor.
