Causes of the Turkey-Syria Earthquake that Killed Thousands of People

Jakarta

More than 2,300 people were reported killed by the earthquake that shook Turki and Syria. There are several factors that are said to make the earthquake cause many fatalities.

Reported by AFP, Monday (6/2/2023) a combination of factors makes this strong earthquake very deadly. Some of these factors are the time of occurrence, location, relatively calm fault lines to the weak construction of buildings that collapse.

It was stated that currently there were more than 2,300 people killed by the M 7.8 earthquake that occurred on Monday morning local time. The number of victims is expected to increase due to aftershocks.

The earthquake caused devastation partly because of its strength and because it hit populated areas. Another reason is because the earthquake occurred at 04:17 (0117 GMT), which means that people were sleeping.

“They were trapped when their house collapsed,” honorary researcher at the British Geological Survey Roger Musson told AFP.

Building construction is also not “absolutely adequate for areas prone to major earthquakes,” he said.

The other thing that is partly due to the fact that the fault line where the earthquake occurred was relatively calm recently.

It is known, Turkey is in one of the most active earthquake zones in the world. An earthquake along the North Anatolian fault line in the northern Turkish region of Duzce killed more than 17,000 people in 1999.

“But Monday’s quake occurred on the other side of the country, along the East Anatolian fault. The East Anatolia Fault has not had a magnitude 7 earthquake in more than two centuries, which could mean people “ignore how dangerous it is,” Musson said.
