Causes of Death and Humanitarian Disasters in Nagorno-Karabakh: Azerbaijan’s Ignored Court Order and Ongoing Border Clashes with Armenia

In the announcement about the causes of death, the regional ombudsman refers to the conclusion of forensic experts.

In December, Azerbaijan closed the Lachin Corridor, the only road connecting the Armenian-populated Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia.

For half a year, the only source of food and other basic necessities for the 120,000 inhabitants of the region were the humanitarian convoys of the International Committee of the Red Cross and a contingent of Russian peacekeepers.

This has led to acute shortages of food, medicine and fuel.

On July 15, Azerbaijan also stopped sending Red Cross vehicles to the region, and as a result, the humanitarian disaster worsened.

In February, the UN International Court of Justice in The Hague, where Armenia had filed a claim, ordered Azerbaijan to implement all available measures to ensure unhindered movement of people, transport and cargo in both directions along the Lachin corridor.

Azerbaijan ignores the court’s decision, but Baku propagandists claim that the way is open.

The hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan that broke out in 2020 and lasted for six weeks ended when the two countries concluded a cease-fire agreement through Russia.

According to the agreement, the Armenians lost part of the core territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as all the districts of the so-called security buffer zone, which had been under Armenian control since the 1990s.

Despite peace talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan under the auspices of the United States and the European Union (EU), clashes often occur on the border between the two countries.
