Dr. Hossam Mowafi, Professor of Critical Cases at Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine, revealed a serious disease that threatens the liver, resulting from other health problems.

Mowafi said during his program “My Lord, Increase Me in Knowledge”, broadcast on Sada Al-Balad channel, that the disease he is referring to is cirrhosis of the liver, stressing that it is a common complication of a number of diseases.

The professor of critical care medicine explained that hepatitis C and B are diseases that may cause cirrhosis of the liver for some patients, even after recovery, as a result of the damage caused by the viral infection to its cells.

He added that patients with fatty liver, if they notice that the stool color is black, and they always feel lethargic and tired, then this is evidence that they have cirrhosis.

Muwafi pointed out that black stools in patients with cirrhosis occur due to internal bleeding in the digestive system, while the feeling of depression is associated with a decrease in hemoglobin in the blood.

He concluded by explaining that cirrhosis of the liver causes high blood pressure in the portal vein, which leads to esophageal varices.
