A brain tumor is a condition in which a mass or abnormal cell growth occurs in a person’s brain. Brain tumors have many types, some are non-cancerous (benign) and some brain tumors are cancerous (malignant).

Brain tumors can start in the brain (primary brain tumors), or cancer can start in other parts of the body and spread to a person’s brain as secondary brain tumors (metastasize).

Primary brain tumors begin when normal cells develop changes (mutations) in DNA. The cell’s DNA contains instructions that tell the cell what to do. Mutations tell cells to grow and divide rapidly in order to stay alive when healthy cells die.
The result is a mass of abnormal cells that form a tumor. In adults, primary brain tumors are much less common than secondary brain tumors, where the cancer starts elsewhere and spreads to the brain.
