There are several causes of acid rain that hit Indonesia, including:
1. Sulfur dan Nitrogen
The first causes of acid rain are sulfur and nitrogen. Sulfur and nitrogen from industry, power plants, from motor vehicles, to ammonia produced from agricultural activities are the causes of acid rain. Sulfur and nitrogen are two compounds from combustion products. Then sulfur is also a compound that comes from forest fires and also from volcanic eruptions.
Various industries that are managed by humans such as the palm oil industry and the metal industry will also produce sulfur dioxide which can be the cause of acid rain. Meanwhile, the chemical fertilizer and drug industries that require high-temperature combustion will produce nitrogen oxides which is also a compound that can cause acid rain.
2. Carbon dioxide and Carbon Monoxide
The cause of acid rain can occur due to air pollution caused by carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, to sulfur dioxide. Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide come from vehicle pollution and the result of the combustion process. These two compounds when met with water can form carbonic acid or are often grouped as weak acids.
Hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide are compounds produced by heating and burning sulfur. When met with water, these two compounds will form sulfuric acid which belongs to the strong acid group and can cause acid rain.
Ordinary rain in general already contains acid because of the CO2 content, but the pH of this rain is still around 6. However, in areas that have experienced very severe environmental and air pollution, it will cause a high level of acidity and make the pH lower.
