Doc, since childhood my heart often beats without knowing the cause and happens suddenly. Sometimes this pounding heart is accompanied by a dark look and the body feels like it is floating.
What do you think is the cause and is this condition dangerous?

Palpitations or what is often called fluttering is a condition that occurs when the heart rate is fast or the heart rate is irregular. It is generally felt as a sensation of heartbeat, such as stopping for a moment, rapid pounding in the chest or neck, or flip-flop pounding in the chest.
Most palpitations are harmless, but in certain circumstances they can be life threatening.
Palpitations are often nonspecific. It can be a symptom or diagnosis of a disease.
The causes can vary, ranging from sports activities, stress to heart rhythm disturbances or arrhythmias. At a younger age, palpitations generally rarely originate from heart problems.
On the other hand, palpitations in old age are often accompanied by structural heart disorders.
Palpitations that are rare and only last a few seconds do not require a special examination by a doctor. If palpitations are accompanied by chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting or almost fainting, you should see a doctor.
The doctor will usually perform a basic physical examination with electrocardiography (ECG), to assess whether or not there is a heart rhythm disturbance. If problems are found in the heart examination or ECG, you should consult further with a heart and blood vessel specialist to get the right examination and treatment.
