What is heat rash?

Heat rash is a skin rash that appears on some areas of the body when the temperature is too high or when exposed to the sun, causing a tingling and itching sensation.

Heat rash is called prickly heat, or miliaria rubra. Anyone can get heat rash, but it’s most common in infants and young children.

What causes heat rash?

Heat rash occurs when the weather is hot and humid, which causes excessive sweating and retention of sweat under the skin. This causes sweat to leak into the surrounding tissues, which leads to irritation, which leads to a rash.

What are the symptoms of heat rash?

Heat rash looks like small, raised bumps surrounded by red, irritated skin. The rash may have little or no redness, which can make it less noticeable and difficult to spot.

Instead, the bumps may appear gray, purple, or white. For some people with darker skin, the inflammation from heat rash can cause the affected area to become lighter or darker. Doctors call this post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and it usually lasts for a few weeks or months.

Heat rash usually occurs on parts of the body that are covered by clothing, such as:

The heat rash usually lasts about two to three days, and it is possible for the heat rash to spread to other parts of the body, due to blockage of the sweat pathways.

Heat rash treatment

There is no standard treatment for heat rash, and the skin usually improves once it cools down.

Some things you can do at home to get relief:

– Stay away from the sun and stay in a place with a lower temperature.

– Getting rid of sweaty clothes.

Take a cold shower.

Wear loose cotton clothing.

– Avoid scratching the skin to prevent aggravation of the condition.

– Avoid using ointments or creams that maintain skin moisture.

Also avoid products that may clog pores, such as oils or scented lotions.
