While Crohn’s disease affects the entire digestive system (stomach, intestines and esophagus), ulcerative colitis specifically affects the lining of the large intestine. It is an inflammatory pathology, which evolves in the form of symptomatic outbreaks, interspersed with periods of well-being. The main clinical signs are stomach aches associated with bloody and mucous diarrhoea. According to the file on the MICI published by the Foundation for Medical Research in 2022, ulcerative colitis (also called ulcerative colitis) affects 5 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants each year. The causes of the disease are still unknown, and its treatment is, to date, purely symptomatic.

In France, nearly 200,000 people suffer from chronic inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD (foundation for medical research). This classification essentially encompasses two pathologies: ulcerative colitis (or hemorrhagic rectocolitis) and Crohn’s disease. Unlike the latter, which affects the entire digestive system (stomach, intestines and esophagus), ulcerative colitis concentrates on the lining of the large intestine. In affected individuals, the inflammation begins above the anus, in the lower colon area, and progresses up the intestine.
