Caune fails to reach the final of the 5000 meters in his first Olympic outing, finishing 33rd

At the start of the race, Caune was at the head of the group after the leader from Japan, Yuma Yamamoto, but in the second half of the distance, as the rivals increased their pace, the Latvian failed to stay in the positions in the fight for the final.

Caune finished in 15 minutes, 38.19 seconds, 38.55 seconds behind the top eight going into the final. To reach the final, the Latvian had to run 0.84 seconds faster than her own Latvian record.

Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon was the fastest in this semi-final (14:57.56), the top eight finishing in 2.08 seconds. The second race was slightly slower and Kenyan winner Beatrice Chebeta finished in 15 minutes and 0.73 seconds.

In the final, which will be held on August 5, the eight fastest from each race, in which 20 athletes participated, entered. At the end of the competition, Caunei was in 33rd place.

Caune, 19 years old, from Valmieri is a debater at these games.
